Somewhere out there, Demi Moore is taking a meeting with Les Moonves…
It’s very telling when you look at the list of actresses who today got Emmy nominations for their work in drama series:
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters, ABC
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer, TNT
Glenn Close, Damages, FX
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, NBC
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace, TNT
With Sedgwick as the youngest of the five talented actresses at age 42, the median age of the quintet of nominees is 52 years old. With acclaimed, award-winning actresses like Jessica Alba, Megan Fox, and Anne Hathaway grabbing all the plum big-budget studio film roles, is it any wonder that TV is where older good actresses continue to turn to solid, reliable work? Never mind the fact that TV drama’s overall quality is as good if not better than the best Hollywood can muster in their motion pictures.
To be fair, though, I really think Anne Hathaway is plenty talented, her age simply attracts the suits more at Warner Bros., Universal & Paramount.
That was painful to watch, and I blame neither candidate for it, really, the Republican OR the Democrat.
The less people see of that performance by ABC News, the better.
Entertainment Weekly, a magazine that continues to endear me for how much comic book-related material they cover, has a terrific feature on their website right now, “Comic Books: The One That Hooked Me!”
In it, over a dozen of the top industry talents show what was THE book that brought them where they are today. I like that in many instances the writers and artists acknowledge that they may have picked up something here and there in their youth that was practically throwaway, but here they detail the one that really stuck.
For me?
That’s easy: The New Teen Titans #16
As a kid growing up in the 70s, I was all over ANYTHING to do with superheroes. I’d follow the adventures of the Hulk, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, you name it, on TV. Mom would buy me the occasional comic book of said characters, and artistically I could never have enough superhero coloring books.
But it wasn’t until the family moved cross-country at the end of 1980, and I started figuring out the monthly schedule of comic books at my new neighborhood’s 7-11. The book that locked me in like a tractor beam was this gem by Marv Wolfman & George Perez. The story blew me away as a kid (no happy ending??), but even more so was Perez’s rendering of Robin, someone I only knew as a guy voiced by Casey Kasem (Super Friends), and portayed in the flesh by Burt Ward (Batman). I don’t think think Dick Grayson ever looked so bad-ass in the yellow cape and red & green tights, but it turned out to be a sign of good things to come for the character. Nightwing, anyone? Plus the other characters who were brand new to me (Starfire, Cyborg, Changeling) were instantly easy to connect with.
All thanks to Mr. Browfield for recently talking up the tattoo work I’ve had done. It’s been a labor of love in more ways that one over the last 4-5 years, and I’m happy to say it’s truly complete now.
Whereas this was how it was 6 months ago…
Now it’s truly come to life. A little breakdown of the characters and details?? Going left to right…
The first character, the one in green was the first original piece Patrick Cornolo did for me back in 2003. I had the idea to have him design a punk version of Green Fury.
Underneath that is a passage from Bob Seger’s “Fire Lake”, a tribute to my late father, and the song I danced with my mom to when I got married in September of 2007.
Underneath that’s a free liger that Mr. Cornolo did for me for free, but that’s got nothin’ to do with this. Heh.
Right above said liger is where we start to get to the newest stuff, as of March 10th…
I had Patrick add a little tribute to an old friend of mine who, sadly, recently passed away — I got his old jersey number 20.
As you work your way up, there’s a shot of Firehawk, Firestorm’s better half. Right above that, I had Patrick work something else into the flames: my beloved Denver Broncos’ team logo.
Running up the back of my leg, when I got this custom design of the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four, I added the 13 at the bottom as a tribute to my wife’s father who had just passed away around the time of that session. It was always his magic number.
And placed squarely on my calf is one of my favorite individual pieces, Patrick’s Rydenesque take on Wildfire of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
It’s funny how much I dig that one in particular, because I got the worst skin irritation from that one during the healing process that I had to see the doctor for cellulitis. Ouch!!!
But once it got rehabbed it looked pretty stellar and still does.
