Celebrities as Poor Role Models

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Celebrities can be horrible role models, especially for teens that are very impressionable. Some may argue that celebrities never signed up to be role models; however they pursued a profession where their entire lives are in the spotlight. The crazier you are, the more coverage you get. Whether they signed up to be someone’s role model or not, celebrities are looked up to and emulated by many young people, and this is not good.

One thing that many celebrities do best is promoting bad behavior. You cannot walk by a magazine stand without seeing a cover with a picture of a celebrity whose life has gone down the drain due to bad behavior. They are either drunk all the time even in public, being promiscuous, or insulting other groups of people, usually the minority. There are so many photos in magazines like “People” where celebrities are coming out of a nightclub completely intoxicated. This is not good for our youngsters. I know plenty of young people who think the only way to have a good time is to drink on the weekends and get trashed. Where are they getting this idea? One place is definitely celebrities. Teens are just trying to follow their lifestyle because they think celebs are cool. (more…)

Why Does Taco Bell Hate Me So Much?

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

I, like most college students, love fast food especially when it is open late. The fourth meal is a great idea even when eaten as your sixth meal. It happens! Adam Sandler must have been writing his “Taco Bell” dog song about me because I must have offended them in some way. Have you seen the Taco Bell dog recently? Exactly, what happened to him?

Anyway, every time I pull up to the speaker, the person working always asks how I am but they don’t ever listen when I tell them about my day, calluses, and everything else going on. If they didn’t want to know they shouldn’t have asked. Once I’m done telling them my life story I yell my order to them over the snoring and honking. Finally I pull up to the window ready for some food. Here is where the problem always occurs.

The Biggest Loser

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

The Biggest Loser takes reality TV to another level. Not only are they making people famous or infamous depending on their personality, they are changing lives. Many Americans today are very overweight and can’t overcome their weight problems on their own. The Biggest Loser is motivating people all over America to get up off their hind quarters and start exercising and living healthier lives.

This year the producers decided to take a different approach and have people compete in teams and not just as individuals. There were teams made up of best friends, newlyweds, former teammates, ex-husband and ex-wife, strangers, married couple, mother and daughter, mother and son, brothers, and father and daughter. Having someone there to support you in your efforts to become a healthier person is a great idea. Everyone needs motivation especially when facing such a hard task as these contestants.

The contestants on the show have inspired America to promise to lose more than one million pounds and they are keeping track of this number online. There have been people on this show whose life has been put in jeopardy due to their obesity. What started as a different reality TV show turned into a life changing and life saving masterpiece.

Regrettable Comments Made in 2006-2007 Carry Over into the New Year!

Friday, January 25th, 2008

What’s a better way to get your name all over the papers than to say something dumb? In 2006-2007 there were a lot of racial slurs being thrown around. Many of us remember Mel Gibson’s tirade about the Jews which wasn’t the best timing considering he had just released a very controversial movie about the death of Jesus Christ. Wasn’t he a Jew Mel? Things died down a little bit until Don Imus opened his mouth and called the women on the Rutgers basketball team, “nappy headed hoes.” This was just as bad as Mel Gibson’s comment but at least Don Imus hadn’t made a movie about the Rutgers’. Picking up where Don Imus left off, Kelly Tilghman purposed “lynching Tiger Woods in a back alley.” This was probably the worst of the three considering she was suggesting murdering the number one golfer in the world right now where the other two were just making derogatory comments towards Jews and black women. Now the public knows not to blame the Jews for any wars, comment on black women’s hair or any woman’s hair, and definitely not to suggest lynching a black golfer that had changed the sport of golf.
