FOR SERIOUS CONSIDERATION: JONAH HEX #36 REVIEWED.

Cover art for Jonah Hex #36 by Rafa Garres

It’s not a secret that I’m big fan of DC’s Jonah Hex; in fact, I’ve been raving about this book since the first issue hit stands three years ago. I don’t do a lot of comic book reviews anymore but when I read something good that deserves credit for being good—I “come out of retirement” so to speak.

I know it’s early but I firmly believe that Jonah Hex #36 should be nominated for the Eisner Award for Best Single Issue (or One-shot) for 2009.

Breaking News

Maguire and Raimi to rekindle Spider-Man franchise

I for one am very excited. It has been rumored for weeks now, only to be confirmed earlier today. Well hopefully Raimi gets to have his way and not have villains thrown on him and shoved down his throat. I personally don’t believe the blame is entirely on him, just the studio wanting too much in so little time. Spider-Man, to me, is the greatest comic hero ever created. Yes, even above Big Blue or the Caped Crusader. His creation revolutionized how things were done. However, I digress. This is how Marvel will try and stay ahead of the game…especially with DC on the verge to bombard our cinemas with Wonder Woman, Green Lanter, Green Arrow, etc.

R.A.V.A.G.E. - American Monsta - With soooo many trails having already been blazed (with varied success, I might add), some would say that a Remix project is the last thing hip-hoppa’s world-wide wanna hear! I mean let’s face it, remix projects are soooo 2002, right? (Wrong!!) Check out R.A.V.A.G.E’s rendition of Jay-Z’s American Gangster album! It’s right up there with 9th Wonder’s God’s Stepson and Dangermouse’s The Grey Album!! Proper with a Capital P! Download: American Monsta

Midaz the Beast - I guess what’s old is new again (see above), as Flo-Town’s own Midaz the Beast takes-on the daunting task of mixing his rhymes over the beats of noneother than Soul Brother #1, Pete Rock!! Y’all all know Pete’s been doin’ this for years (“T.R.O.Y.,“Don’t Curse,” “The World Is Yours”), and Midaz ever the hungry emcee promises to bring his A-game!  Says Midaz of the project “I wanted to test my pen against greatness..” And a young Will Smith thought he could “Beat Mike Tyson” too!

‘W.’ - Am I high on crazy pills or does this look good?!?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Oliver Stone’s ‘W.’ is just around the corner…and I find myself really sold based on the cast alone. Check out the trailer for yourself.

I mean, I’m not a big fan of the man–but…the movie looks good. Now, discuss.

Brett Ratner on “Harbinger”.

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Brett Ratner is a busy man; he has recently moved to Paramount and while there he wants to make “mainstream tentpole” movies, reports Variety. One of the first two he says he will be working on is Harbinger. From the article: Ratner said after directing “X-Men: The Last Stand,” he was eager to build a superhero franchise from the ground up. Though it should be noted that this past March, it was announced that Paramount Pictures acquired the rights of Harbinger, enlisting Brett Ratner as director. Alexandra Milchan, Jay Stern Dinesh Shamdasani, Jason Kothari and Ratner will all produce. It seems with his departure, they managed to come to some sort of agreement.

Number 9, Number 9, Number 9

Last weekend, while several of us were working for Newsarama, The Scream Factory and others during Wizard World Chicago . . . ShotgunReviews.com turned nine. That’s right . . . nine years.

That seems like a pretty long time to keep a website together. And it is. I’m pretty proud of what we’ve done, and I’m pretty proud of the continually growing and evolving crew that works here. We’re not done yet. Keep your eyes out for some new things coming soon.

ShotgunReviews.com. You can’t get rid of us. Even with medication.

Cover of Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse

Over the past couple of months on the ‘Rama, I’ve been covering Marvel’s writing situation on Punisher MAX in the advent of Garth Ennis’ departure from the book and the arrival of Victor Gischler, Gregg Hurwitz, and Duane Swierczynski as a rotating trifecta of violence.

I was very fortunate to get an advanced copy of Gischler’s Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse for an advanced review. It’s really quite a good read…

Here’s an excerpt of the book from Simon & Schuster.

Here’s my review.

And here’s some press on the book via Victor’s MySpace.

I think the Punisher MAX title is in good hands.

Have a Happy Fourth.

Steve Ekstrom Needs You to “Double Click Your Mouse”. (Insert masturbation joke here.)

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Oh, Steve--you pathetic sonuvabitch...

A few months ago, I joined RedRoom.com at the request of Ivory Madison, CEO of Red Room, who I interviewed for Newsarama for her work on Huntress Year One for DC Comics.

Well, now, I’m embroiled in the “clicking war” of a lifetime. The stakes: an expense paid overnight for two to San Francisco and dinner with said CEO and her friends from Red Room. Basically, for every unique click I receive between June 1 and July 31st, I get a notch on the post–the more notches–you get the rest…

Here’s the thing–I’M IN FIRST PLACE…but just barely. Want to help me win this thing?

Opie Gets Laid- Coming to DVD this year

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

This is making the rounds, the DVD’ll be out later this year, and frankly, I think this’ll be a great little indie comedy. If it can hit half the funny that the trailer promises, it’ll be worth checking out. Enjoy!

Advanced Review of Kick-Ass #3

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Kick-Ass artwork

When someone offers me a free comic book—I take it. Good, Bad, Ugly—you never know what you’re gonna get but it’s free…and free is good. In this case, it was very good. I was one of the few folks who responded to Mark Millar’s offer for a free, lettered electronic copy of Kick-Ass #3 on his forum on the MillarWorld website in exchange for a review of the book. I’ve been reading this title since it started, several months ago, and, so far, it’s kept my attention with its over-the-top hyper-realism, violence, and social commentary. As a cautious reader, I realized quickly that there is more to this story than the surface “real life superhero” premise so I’ve been waiting for the other shoe to drop on Kick-Ass protagonist, Dave Lizewski, since the first issue.

Something tells me that the aforementioned “other shoe” has begun its tumultuous journey with the advent of the climax of Kick-Ass #3.

I Know You Gonna Dig This #9

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

The Summertime music explosion is right around the corner! While the hip-hop world feverishly awaits for new “ish” releases from Lil Wayne, Game, Nas and Ice Cube (oh yeah, O’Shea is promising a ‘hot’ Summer with Raw Footage); the Lyrical Lounge got you covered with these hearty appetizers:

JR Writer - Do Dat - Break-ups. First, the Fat Boy’s then N.W.A. and now The Dipset. Cam’s, Jimmy’s and Max B’s latestet falling out hasn’t stopped jr_small-0001.jpgJR Writer’s grind! Check out “Do Dat” from the forthcoming album Politics & Bullshit. Dipset unity or not, looks as if ”the writer of rappers” is gonna continue to drop heat! (Babygrande)

Dame Grease featuring (the recently ousted Dipset member) Max B - Connecticut Kush is the first (and prob the only) single off Dame’s goonmusik_small.jpgself-produced compilation Goon Musik! (”Light a spliff, nod your head, and zone out to “Connecticut Kush.” - Who knew the good stuff was buddin’ up in New England?)

Count Bass D - Can We Hang Out Tonight - Look up The Count’s discography and you’ll realize l7.jpgthat dude’s got enough music in the catalog to make MF Doom envious. I doubt if even Wikipedia can keep up with him! A special shout goes out to 1320 Records for putting a focus on supporting ‘real’ music! And be sure to check for Count Bass D’s new album, tentatively titled L7 droppin’ later this year..

Almost September - Love- A rather coloful collective we have here, as the visual dynamic in the group plays out like a bag of Skittles. Hip-hop meets-chic-meets-punk ???  But what the hey, l_a00fbc1cd4d46efa9d223352c18edf73.jpgthey got an industree co-sign from none other than Sleepy Brown and the Blastmaster KRS-One-on their debut single -so don’t hate on em’ to hard!! (And yes, that is MC Lyte!!)
