It’s no secret that Warner Bros. is sitting a superhero goldmine, but has so much trouble getting their material out there. That could soon change, as Warners is readying to revamp how DC’s properties are developed — changes that could be announced within the next month. This article really intrigues me. It’s interesting that they decide this now after Marvel has been doing it for about a decade now. Not all of Marvel films have been as successful and DC knows what failure of a possible franchise-starter feels like (Catwoman) as well as a multi-million dollar reboot (Superman Returns) crash to the ground. Though things could be looking up. (more…)
Brett Ratner is a busy man; he has recently moved to Paramount and while there he wants to make “mainstream tentpole” movies, reports Variety. One of the first two he says he will be working on is Harbinger. From the article: Ratner said after directing “X-Men: The Last Stand,” he was eager to build a superhero franchise from the ground up. Though it should be noted that this past March, it was announced that Paramount Pictures acquired the rights of Harbinger, enlisting Brett Ratner as director. Alexandra Milchan, Jay Stern Dinesh Shamdasani, Jason Kothari and Ratner will all produce. It seems with his departure, they managed to come to some sort of agreement. (more…)
A remake of the cult classic “Red Sonja” has been announced at Comic Con 2008, it is currently in pre-production as very little has been announced so far. It is scheduled for a 2009 release and will be produced by Robert Rodriguez, directed by Douglas Aarniokoski, and actress Rose McGowan will portray Red Sonja. Djimon Hounsou will play the role of Thulsa Doom and Kulan Gath will also play a major role in the upcoming movie.
I am a bit skeptical about this movie, as the whole “hot chick kicking ass” has been done over and over again. Can anyone recall the movie failures that were Catwoman or Elektra? But having said that Robert Rodriguez does often end up making a good movie, so we can only hope he does a good job with the Red Sonja movie. Hopefully it’s going to be very gritty, very violent and rated R, as I would want it to be as faithful as possible to the comic book series.
Well that did not take long at all, seems the trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine that was shown at Comic Con 2008 has been leaked onto youtube. Personally I cant wait for this, I now have 3 movies I am looking forward to in 2009: Watchmen, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Terminator 4: Salvation. Check out the trailer.
Now, I want to believe. I spent 6 seasons, 1 movie, and about 8.5 episodes believing in the power of The Mulder and The Scully. So it is with a dull heartache and a lengthy rant that I say that “I Want to Believe,” the new reunion X-Files film, trumping itself as “THRILLING” “SMART” and “SEXY,” manages to be none of the above. As a fellow X-Phile put it, “It was like seeing your high school sweetheart, who you thought you would always love more than life itself, and seeing that, well…you’d both grown and changed.” AND that s/he had developed a mysterious skin rash, comb-over, and the conversation ability of a small lizard.
Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale), the man fated to be the leader of the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators, and the future he was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a Terminator whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they find out a terrible secret that may lead to the possible annihilation of mankind.
For those of you who do not know The Watchmen series it was written by Alan Moore who also wrote the cult classic “V for Vendetta” and “From Hell“. The basic plot of The Watchmen center around an alternate reality that closely mirrors the contemporary world of the 1980s. The main difference is the existence of superheroes. Their presence in this history has altered the outcomes of real-world events such as the Vietnam War and presidency of Richard Nixon.
Although the cast of Watchmen are commonly called “superheroes,” the only character in the principal cast who possesses superhuman powers is Dr. Manhattan. In the comic, they refer to themselves as “costumed adventurers”. And yes they have released a trailer for it, and all I can say is holy shit this is going to be really good check out the trailer:
Three years ago, Christopher Nolan and Co. released Batman Begins. A movie that gave rebirth to the Batman franchise after being destroyed by Joel Schumacher and his “comic” feeling. I don’t mean as in comic book, I mean…well, you’ve seen Batman and Robin, right? Yeah. Nolan did away with that. With proper casting and a darker feel and environment. He gave not only life to the Caped Crusader…but even Gotham City felt like a character in its own right. With sets like the Narrows and Wayne Tower and a monorail so you can see how far it goes, and how you felt that the city was crumbling under it’s own corruption. Nolan made sure that Batman didn’t always fight “colorful” villains, he can take down mob bosses and immortals alike. And at the end of film…with the conversation with Gordon about a certain someone with a “taste for the theatrical”. Just a hint of things to come. Simply put: one of the best movies of the decade.
Wow! It’s only been like 20 years or so but DC’s most famous heroine is finally getting her own staring movie! YES! Sure it’s in a direct to DVD cartoon format, but hey, it’s better than nothing, right? It’s about time Wondie gets into the game and gets some multimedia solo love. Let’s keep our fingers and toes crossed that this movie is as amazing and as awesome as it should be!
My one minor complaint? Why does Wonder Woman have to be drawn from the back, with mini-ish thong panties ridding up her rear? Who is this image trying to market itself too? Lonely comic book men? Would we see Superman and Batman flaring out their asses to promote their movies? Sure our gal’s a super sexy lady, but can’t we get a sexy shot that doesn’t appear to be slightly exploitative?
Oh well, its like raging against the comic machine here, and being all combative will only take away from the excitement that; Wonder Woman’s getting a film that’s all about her! Yay! So instead of dwelling on the things that I cannot change I am just going to focus on the positive side of this news. Let’s hope this is just the first of many Wonder Woman features. Yippee!

Like the Hulk before it; is anyone really hopping up and down with joy and excitement over this new Punisher movie? Will this second big screen take on the Punisher somehow make a more positive impact than the first one - especially in today’s way, way, way overloaded superhero-movie-market?
Basically, do we really need another Punisher flick? Anyone?
Personally I feel Marvel has to be very careful that they don’t start over-saturating the movie going audience with too many B, C and D list superhero films. Now that Marvel “the Movie Studio” has tons of cash - and heaps of praise and goodwill - for the awesomeness that came from the highly successful Iron Man movie they need to tread extra carefully so as not to spoil it all with too much, too soon.
Sometimes less is certainly more. More so when the “less” equals terrific films and the “more” equals crappy movies everyone hates. So don’t blow it Marvel, people love you right now! This is your time to shine, as long as you don’t screw it all up!
Being as much of a fan as I am of Pixar’s work, I didn’t sit down to watch their latest theatrical release with a completely unbiased mindset–but even so I can safely say that it’s a smart film that delivers something for everyone.
WALL-E is partially a robotic love story and partially an Idiocracy-esque look into the future of the human race; its light humor never ceases to stir up laughter, and its candid look at our consumer culture is simultaneously funny and frightening. The startlingly human qualities and emotions of the two mechanical main characters–despite their inability to converse with words–brings a richness to the movie that I have not experienced in a film for a long time. The eloquent body language and expressive verbal inflection of WALL-E and his robotic friends make this movie one worth watching on the big screen. Because of the limited amount of dialogue in the film, WALL-E possesses a subtlety that is rare in American cinema, taking “show, don’t tell,” to a new level. It’s one of the best movies that you’ll get a chance to see this summer.
Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild, which came hot off the presses in time to debut at the San Francisco Frameline32 Film Festival this past Saturday, is a movie religious conservative groups can use as proof to show the sexual moral depravity of the gay community. In many ways these groups would have a point, as practically every possible sexual taboo and fetish is joyfully glorified and playfully exploited on the screen, all in the name of crass comedy. To this I say, based on the sheer trashy awesomeness I witnessed; “Hur-f**king-ray!”
This raunchy, filthy, dirty, carnal, and, yes, hysterical spoof is just what we gays needs to embrace and laugh at all of our insipid stereotypes; like our tendency towards super flamboyantness, our roving “drive” to sex it up with anyone and anything, and our enjoyment and celebration of sex acts outside the “norm.” Another Gay Sequel is like a huge middle finger cheerily waving to all those who claim the gays are the cause of all the natural calamities in the United States (look it up, there are many groups who claim this). If we homosexuals are indeed the down fall of Western Civilization due to our sexual wiles and loose morals - which are all unflinchingly showcased in Another Gay Sequel - then I happily side with the queers sinking the ship.
