“*cough*wifebeater.” Prodigy (Ritchie Gilmore), on Hank Pym, Avengers: The Initiative #13.

One step closer to being up to date, although there’s some stuff in my future work plate that I know will make me fall behind again… unless I can write a column a day… Well, last column’s Dissect This! was not found by my readers (granted, I didn’t give them much time), but it’s the fact that Beast Boy is morphed into some sort of demonic goat with a cape… and he’s not a metamorph, just a zoomorph. Not much to say, except to launch the Dissector’s Picks Of The Week (this is week 05/21, by the way):

“TAKE MY TENTACLE!” Random alien, Doctor Who #6.

Seventy five columns! Nice number, isn’t it? I accept diamond gifts, if you like… or from Diamond Distribution. This column is on comics published the week of 05/14, and by the way, nobody found the DT! from last time. Captain America’s costume lacks the stripes in the back… remember, it’s based on the US flag?

“I always punch anything I see that’s wearing a swastika!” Captain America, Giant-Size Avengers/Invaders #1.

Alright, still on the catch up job, with a column about comics published on the week of 05/07, plus a few older dissections. Last column’s Dissect This! was spotted by Sully, who reaches the rank of Lieutenant in the HDSC. Of course, you can’t kill 29 billion men, since there’s roughly over 6 billion people on Earth; and no Snakebyte, it doesn’t matter that Y: The Last Man happens in a fictitious Earth.

EMMY AWARDS — Television: A Safe Haven for good actresses…

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Glenn Close

Somewhere out there, Demi Moore is taking a meeting with Les Moonves…

It’s very telling when you look at the list of actresses who today got Emmy nominations for their work in drama series:

Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters, ABC

Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer, TNT

Glenn Close, Damages, FX

Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, NBC

Holly Hunter, Saving Grace, TNT

With Sedgwick as the youngest of the five talented actresses at age 42, the median age of the quintet of nominees is 52 years old.  With acclaimed, award-winning actresses like Jessica Alba, Megan Fox, and Anne Hathaway grabbing all the plum big-budget studio film roles, is it any wonder that TV is where older good actresses continue to turn to solid, reliable work?  Never mind the fact that TV drama’s overall quality is as good if not better than the best Hollywood can muster in their motion pictures.

To be fair, though, I really think Anne Hathaway is plenty talented, her age simply attracts the suits more at Warner Bros.,  Universal & Paramount.

“I fucking hate writing speeches. I would rather suck green syphalitic donkey dicks! (filled with puss).” Mayor Mitchell Hundred, Ex Machina #36, speech draft complete with illustrations.

I’m trying to get back on the horse here, and I think I’ve never been so behind! But anyway, like Master Yoda said, there is no try… Last column was 20 days ago, and nobody got the Dissect This!, and I fear my lack of posting is making me loose readers, so I hope I can prevent that. The DT! was that the relative sizes of Darth Krayt and the stormtroopers around him were all screwed up, making him look twice the size of the stormies.

Too early?

Comic Book Resources has an exclusive look at the first color artwork from Terry Dodson’s run on Uncanny X-Men. As you would expect, it’s filled with, shall we say, “huge tracts of land”. Beyond that, it’s pretty good stuff.

There’s also a pic of a Michael Turner cover for issue #500:

x-men

Let’s see… I count 15 X-Men, and zero feet. No background, either. Yep, that’s definitely a Michael Turner drawing. (Actually, I really do kind of like it. It’s definitely one of the cooler covers Turner drew.)

And for the love of God, would somebody please redesign Dazzler’s costume (as seen in the Dodson drawing of the X-Women)? She’s been wearing that blue monstrosity for over 20 years.

Wonder Woman FINALLY gets the Star Treatment!

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

ww.JPG

Wow! It’s only been like 20 years or so but DC’s most famous heroine is finally getting her own staring movie! YES! Sure it’s in a direct to DVD cartoon format, but hey, it’s better than nothing, right? It’s about time Wondie gets into the game and gets some multimedia solo love. Let’s keep our fingers and toes crossed that this movie is as amazing and as awesome as it should be!

My one minor complaint? Why does Wonder Woman have to be drawn from the back, with mini-ish thong panties ridding up her rear? Who is this image trying to market itself too? Lonely comic book men? Would we see Superman and Batman flaring out their asses to promote their movies? Sure our gal’s a super sexy lady, but can’t we get a sexy shot that doesn’t appear to be slightly exploitative?

Oh well, its like raging against the comic machine here, and being all combative will only take away from the excitement that; Wonder Woman’s getting a film that’s all about her! Yay! So instead of dwelling on the things that I cannot change I am just going to focus on the positive side of this news. Let’s hope this is just the first of many Wonder Woman features. Yippee!

Michael Turner: 1972-2008

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

The comic book industry has lost one of its biggest superstars as Michael Turner, best known for co-creating Witchblade for Top Cow, Fathom for his own Aspen MLT, and a slew of covers for both DC and Marvel, passed away last night at the age of 37 after a long battle with cancer. It’s a testament to his spirit and tenacity that he continued to produce work right up until the very end. Our condolences to his friends and family.

“This job would be a lot easier if it was more like television. I’d find a clue during a special effects montage, and use it to solve the whole case in under an hour. That, and my assistant would be a beautiful woman in a tight sweater.” NYPD Crime Scene Investigator, Witchblade #117.

Well, about a month have passed since I last posted a column, and since I started this one, just putting in the Quote Of The Week… and I’ll confess that even if for most of that month I’ve been swamped with work, this past week I just slacked. So let’s see if I can finish this column today. Comics in this column were published on the week of 04/23… I still have two more weeks from April, the whole month of May, and three weeks (soon to be four) from June… Catch up time, yet again.

THE LAST FULL SEASON FOR THE INCREDIBLE HULK TV SHOW

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

hulk41.jpg

The fourth season for the Incredible Hulk TV show was the last full season of the show.  In fact, the fourth season had only 18 episodes due to a writer’s strike that year that shortened the TV season.  There would be a 5th season however the show would be canceled after just seven episodes.  It’s clear that by the fourth season the show was starting to lose steam.  The major reason for this was budget cuts.  While the producers wanted to do more with the character, budget constrictions forced them to do even less.  In fact as noted during the documentary on the season three DVD set, studio bigwigs wanted only one Hulk appearance per episode compared to the usual two.  Good sense won out on that battle but the show was still one of the most expensive to produce at the time so things were not going to get any easier for the writers.

Because of this, the fourth season lacks consistency.  It’s almost if rather than try to make a lot of good episodes the producers opted to put all their eggs in one basket and make a handful of outstanding episodes.  Of course, the downside to this was that this meant there were quite a few bad episodes as well.  One cool aspect in season four is that Lou Ferrigno was able to play a role other than the Hulk, appearing as a bodybuilder in the episode “King of the Beach.”

Season four is highlighted by a pair of outstanding two-part episodes.  “Prometheus” and “The First” aren’t just two of the best episodes of the season but two of the best of the show’s entire run.  From a comic book fan’s standpoint, these episodes were both comic-esque in their plots as well as very exciting.

In “Prometheus”, David is caught halfway through his transformation into the Hulk.  In a nod to the long-running battle between the Hulk and General Thunderbolt Ross, the Hulk is captured by the Military and placed into titanium holding cell so scientists can study and experiment on him.  This is truly a fantastic two-parner as it’s one of the few times during the series’ run that you ever felt the Hulk was in danger.

“Dark Side” again shows the writers were at least paying a bit of attention to the comics.  David’s latest experiment goes awry resulting in his transformation into a savage, rampaging Hulk, and endangering all those around him. In

“Bring Me the Head of the Hulk” (directed by Bill Bixby) a rival tabloid to the National Register hires a mercenary to kill the Hulk, setting an elaborate trap for him.  Of all people, it is reporter Jack McGee who comes to Banner/Hulk’s aid.

“The First” is the other outstanding two-part episode.  David Banner learns about Dr. Clive, another man who transformed into a Hulk-like creature but was able to find a cure.  David attempts to cure himself using Clive’s notes but Clive subjects himself to radiation and turns into an evil Hulk.  The pair of green behemoths battle for supremacy.  Dick Durock, who also played the Swamp Thing, plays the evil Hulk and while he doesn’t have Ferrigno’s muscle development, he’s a big guide and looked maniacal when made up in the green makeup.  One of the very few times we were treated to a comic book-style battle during the series.

Other outstanding episodes in season four include “Interview with the Hulk” and “Wax Museum”.  But, as mentioned, this season had some of the worst episodes as well so this set is a mixed lot but well worth it for the episodes I mentioned above.  Grade B.

I Named A Marvel Character!

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Alright, so it’s out! Incredible Hercules #118 came out yesterday, with the Marvel character I named!

This is the original journal entry I made:

Anyone remember how in Incredible Hercules, some time ago, they asked for suggestions on how to name Amadeus Cho’s coyote pup? Well, check this out:

Subject: INCREDIBLE HERCULES - You named Amadeus Cho’s Pup!

Hey Magnus,

Fred Van Lente and Greg Pak here. We just wanted to say congratulations ’cause we selected your clever suggestion, Kerberos, as the official name of Amadeus Cho’s coyote pup.

We really liked the combo mythological/computer programming connection, and this way we can nickname ‘em Kirby, which we also like for hopefully-obvious reasons.

We’re writing not just to thank you, but also because we’re acknowledging your success in the upcoming Incredible Hercules #118 (shipping in June) and we wanted to know if you wanted to tell us your real name to credit you; otherwise, we’ll just list you as “MaGnUs”.

Let us know ASAP, and congrats again!

Best,
Fred & Greg

Well, they could have sent me an autographed copy… although my heart is warmed by a local fellow fan that called me the “Silver Surfer of Uruguayan fandom”. *blush* Oh, and when Herc yells “NERD!”… HE”S YELLING AT ME!!! I’VE BEEN CALLED A NERD BY A GREEK GOD!!!! BY THE QUINTESSENTIAL JOCK OF MYTHOLOGY!!!

PS: Yeah, I know, shameless self-promotion…
