DISCLAIMER (angry creators, please read)

[[WARNING! THIS COLUMN MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS!]]

“We’re going to burn it all down. Because this is not the future we were promised. And if we can’t have that, then we shouldn’t have anything at all.” Doktor Sleepless, Doktor Sleepless #6.

Damn, that Doktor Sleepless quote is harsh, but it’s a good example of the comics “philosophy”, as it takes a definitely “punk-ier” turn. On another note, and before I go on with the rest of the column, I’d like to thank my new friend Julia, from Russia, who works for the same company I do; and gladly helped me with some Russian inquiries (yes, Mike Mignola did his homework for BRPD: 1946) when I contacted completely out of the blue. благодарю, Julia!

Wow! Now this is Art!

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Talented designer Takashi Murakami, who is possibly best know as the current fabo creative-head for Louis Vuitton’s ultra popular handbags, is quite the Pop Art/Anime artist. Perhaps one of his most eye-popping pieces might have to be entitled, “My Lonesome Cowboy,” which features a very manga-ish looking character squirting, well, having quite an…uh…explosion of joy.

Despite its pretty erotic nature, or maybe because of it, this Lonesome Cowboy is for sale at famed Sotheby’s Auction House, with a current asking price being a mere 4 million dollars. So run out and pick it up today!

Check out an image of the happy fella (beware, so not NSFW) here:

the-other-family.JPGOh man, I just know I’m gonna burn in hell over my absolute love of the “pee-my-pants-hilariousness” that is The Other Family; a very off-color, very wrong, very, very sick, and therefore insanely hysterical, take on the dear, sugary-sweet Family Circus newspaper strips.

Seriously, this bastardization is laugh-out-loud funny and seriously un-PC in every way, shape and form. So enjoy at your own risk!

The Cutest Superheroes of them All?

little-heroes.JPG

I know these adorable Marvel Super Hero Squad toys are meant for the little kiddies - the toy line is marketed towards the 3 and up set - but I just can’t help but love them too! In fact, I have a fabulous array of these toys sitting on my desk at work smiling up at me with their sunny cheeriness! Everyday is a fun day with these mini-heroes!

So can I be anymore stoked that these way awesome little versions of my fave heroes are going to be made into a cartoon? Aw yeah they are! Sure the ‘toon might be really, really, really juvenile, but I am holding out hope that Marvel takes a page from the Sponge Bob book and gears the new cartoon to 3 year olds and their parents. A show that both the whippersnappers and the old farts can equally enjoy is entertainment at it’s finest! This has the potential to be a gi-normous hit!

Check out the full toy line and just try to resist their charms: http://www.hasbro.com/marvel/superherosquad

Iron Man: a review.

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Last night, my local movie theater had a special preview showing of Iron Man at 8 pm. So a few of my cronies and I piled up in a clown car and headed out. After the new “Dark Knight”, “Indiana Jones”, and “Incredible Hulk” trailers finished, it was showtime. This was just an all-around good movie. Not just a movie that’s part of the “superhero” genre, but a fun, action-packed movie that everyone can enjoy. Seriously, I’m thinking of asking my mom if she wants to go see it sometime. Possibly for Mother’s Day. While I’m not a huge Iron Man fan, I know the backstory and are familiar with the supporting characters. For those of you out of the Marvel loop for the past 45 years or so, here’s a quick backstory: Created by writer-editor Stan Lee, writer Larry Lieber, and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby, Tony Stark (and his iron-clad alter ego) first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 in March 1963. Tony Stark, after being gravely injured and forced to build a devastating weapon, instead created a suit of power armor to save his life and help protect the world as Iron Man. He is a wealthy industrialist and genius inventor whose suit of armor is laden with technological devices that enable him to fight crime.

I am shocked –SHOCKED, I say — that a network television show that manufactures pop music stars could be accused of ANY malfeasance.

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

From our boy James Zahn at The Scream Factory, it’s the trailer for his forthcoming comic “Death Walks the Streets” (which, itself, ties in to James’s film of the same name, starring Christian Kane of “Angel” fame)!

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

Maybe this is because I don’t get into fighting games, but Batman should always win, no matter what, even against the guy with four arms.

If you forgot about the last time somebody tried this, look here.

DC hates us

From today’s Lying in the Gutters, courtesy of the lovely and talented Rich Johnston:

ITEM! From the New York Comic Con, I hear Brad Meltzer is working on a new heavy-DC-continuity series. A thematic sequel to “Identity Crisis.”

Shia Lebouf, how do you feel about that news?

My sentiments exactly.

CON JOB: Covering Convention News (NYCC ‘08 Part Two)

FUCK YEAH! Gail Simone and Nicola Scott are launching a Secret Six ongoing series!

It’s day two at the NYCC, and thus far, Marvel has been severely underwhelming in terms of big announcements. DC, on the other hand, has been kicking my ass with news. First, there was the announcement of a Power Girl ongoing with the thoroughly awesome Amanda Connor on art; now, it’s a Secret Six ongoing by Gail Simone and Nicola Scott. The previous Secret Six minis are my favorite works by Simone, and given the group’s relatively low profile since the last one, I didn’t think we’d be getting a new mini-series, let alone a monthly title. Now if only DC Direct will get off their keisters and make a Catman action figure… and a Deadshot that doesn’t look anorexic

DC announces ongoing Power Girl series

FINALLY. Here’s a series I can definitely get excited about. I’m not much of a Power Girl fan, so the idea of a monthly series starring the character doesn’t really do a heck of a lot for me. But I have been waiting years for Amanda Connor to choose a regular, monthly assignment, so the subject really doesn’t matter to me. This is an automatic purchase.
