Michie Mee - Around the Way Girl

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

It’s hard to call it these days, either our hip hop heroes are everything we expect them to be and still inspirational, or they’ve gotten a bit too big for their pedestals. During a brief stint at a day job this summer, I made sure to do my part and channel the public funds available to me to pull together Montreal’s biggest Honey Jam to date, featuring Lyrical Lounge favorite Eternia, and hometown heroines Nantali Indongo (don’t sleep on this Nomadic Massive-ly affiliated woman, officially the illest chick in the 514) and Meduza, with the groundbreaking headliner and subject of this interview, Michie Mee. She’s funny, she’s obliging, and she swears by Millie Jackson and Jamaican patties (no bias towards chicken or beef, but she loves home cooking and that of her traveling chef, best). I’m happy to deliver on a promise that I made when I first started giving my ten cents to this here e-zine.* - Angelica LeMinh

Brett Ratner on “Harbinger”.

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Brett Ratner is a busy man; he has recently moved to Paramount and while there he wants to make “mainstream tentpole” movies, reports Variety. One of the first two he says he will be working on is Harbinger. From the article: Ratner said after directing “X-Men: The Last Stand,” he was eager to build a superhero franchise from the ground up. Though it should be noted that this past March, it was announced that Paramount Pictures acquired the rights of Harbinger, enlisting Brett Ratner as director. Alexandra Milchan, Jay Stern Dinesh Shamdasani, Jason Kothari and Ratner will all produce. It seems with his departure, they managed to come to some sort of agreement.

I am, completely unashamedly, a child of the ’90s. I mean, sure, some horrible things came out of that time, but the ’90s were also host to such brilliant cultural phenomena as Nirvana, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Bill and Ted movies.

I took a certain joy in watching Bill S. Preston, Esq., and Ted “Theodore” Logan being excellent to each other. As a child, I had no trouble suspending disbelief, and I had no way of knowing that one day Keanu Reeves would plague the earth with such travesties as the Matrix sequels and Dracula.

So when I went on YouTube today to find the video you’ll see at the end of this post, I was expecting to be disappointed by one of my favorite childhood memories.

Instead, I discovered that Bill and Ted are still as non-non-non-non-non-heinous as I remembered.

For shame, new X-Files movie, for SHAME.

Now, I want to believe.  I spent 6 seasons, 1 movie, and about 8.5 episodes believing in the power of The Mulder and The Scully.  So it is with a dull heartache and a lengthy rant that I say that “I Want to Believe,” the new reunion X-Files film, trumping itself as “THRILLING” “SMART” and “SEXY,” manages to be none of the above.  As a fellow X-Phile put it, “It was like seeing your high school sweetheart, who you thought you would always love more than life itself, and seeing that, well…you’d both grown and changed.”  AND that s/he had developed a mysterious skin rash, comb-over, and the conversation ability of a small lizard.

Bugles - The Forgotten Snack

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Yesterday, my coworker brought in a bag of Nacho Cheese Bugles.  I had quite the late ’80’s/early ’90’s flashback, accompanied by the thought “Can these really be as good as I remember?”  Well, ladies and gentlemen, I assure you - Bugles really are as good as you remember.  While my childhood delight with them mostly focused on putting them on my fingers and pretending I was a witch, this time around they disappeared too quickly for any such play.  The Nacho Cheese flavor is delicious and not as in your face as Doritos.  And who knew that Bugles have actually been around for 5 decades, according to the General Mills site?  They also have a Chinese “Fun Club” although that site appears to be down - I say appears because I do not read Chinese.

The bottom line, folks, is that you really should try Bugles again.  Sure, their time of popularity was about two decades ago, but that doesn’t mean they’re not still delicious.  I highly recommend them.

Whoa! Even though no one demanded it, The New Kids on the Block are returning for a reunion tour (much older, and kinda still hot)! Is anyone excited about this? Me being a lover all things pop culture, teen bubble-gum pop is a personal fave, I find myself very disinterested. Does this mean I am losing my inner teen girl to a more mature, age appropriate adult (I hope not), or is this attempt just too little too late from the boys from Boston? Couldn’t they have come back, I dunno, 15 years ago? Will this tour be a success? I have my doubts since these boys are no Spice Girls (hardy-har-har)!

Q: Why am I up at 4 in the morning?
