WWE Night Of Champions Review - 06.29.08 - Dallas, TX

You might have missed me writing a wrap-up on TNA Slammiversary a few weeks ago, but trust me, I didn’t. I’m really kind of sour on them after the last two shows of theirs have pretty much been a waste of time. I’ll see if I can “get my smile back” enough to review Victory Road next month.
I have some really good news, but I can’t share it until next week. Seriously, this is pretty awesome (for me, at least). No, it’s not me getting whacked either, although I’m sure there are three or four people around here who would like to see me get Kyrbyed.
I’ve gotten some credited and uncredited run around the ‘net lately on my Even Colder story from last week, so that’s always fun.
And, there was the draft last week. I commented a little bit on my blog, which if you’re not reading… well, you’re probably not missing much.
So, that’s enough of me promoting myself. What happened last night? Well, some screwy stuff, I’d say…
Jeff Hardy defeated MVP in the dark match. I can’t wait until Jeff starts on Smackdown this week.
WWE Tag Team Champions John Morrison & The Miz retained over Finlay & Hornswoggle. PUH-leeze. Whose idea was it to put the bathroom break match at the beginning of the show? Grown men should never sell to midgets and this match broke all the rules for me. Moving Finlay to ECW just continues to reinforce the idea that it is a bad show and it needs all kinds of help to keep it interesting. You know what I call ECW? Bill-paying time… it’s on for background noise while I’m paying the bills for the week, but I really don’t pay attention to it. Anyway, this was mostly a handicap match against Finlay until Morrison chokeslammed Hornswoggle for the win.
United States Champion Matt Hardy retained over Chavo Guerrero. When was the last time two ECW matches kicked off a PPV? Come to think of it, when was the last time two ECW matches were on a PPV? Jim Ross and Mick Foley called this match because Mike Adamle sucks. Great match between these two to get the taste of the last one out of my mouth. Hardy won with the Twist of Fate. These guys feuding on ECW should help pick things up over there.
Mark Henry defeated Kane and the Big Show to become the new ECW Champion. Hey, there’s a third ECW match?!? I guess I forgot that this one had to happen. You knew that either Henry or Kane would win now that ECW is going to start touring with Raw, but you’d better get Henry a manager or a translator or something. Kane might have gotten hurt after the Big Show threw him out of the ring, but he finished the match. Maybe Dr. Yankem found some laughing gas under the ring or something… anyway, kudos to Glen Jacobs for being the man for finshing the match and jobbing cleanly to Henry after a splash.
Ted Dibiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes defeat Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes to become the new WWE World Tag Team Champions. Hey, thanks for showing up Old King and Cole! We finally got to you guys. If you haven’t read any spoilers for the last month, then this finish might have surprised you. Emphasize MIGHT. I was pretty sure this would happen when they made the match. Dibiase asked if they could postpone the match because he just got a text from his partner, and he’s running late. Well, that and he’s probably got to get out of locker room court after that too. Anyway, Dibiase and Holly wrestled most of the match until Rhodes tagged in and turned on his partner. Dibiase won with the Million Dollar Dream. Eh.
JBL cut a promo on Dallas, and if this was recorded, this would be the time to get familiar with the FFWD button.
Kofi Kingston defeated Chris Jericho to become the new WWE Intercontinental Champion. Now, where’s Mike Adamle to tell us JAMAICAN ME CRAZY, KOFI! If you’ve been watching him feud with Shelton Benjamin on ECW and Smackdown, you know this kid is the first real deal in a while, as long as he doesn’t become a flake like Carlito and claim the company is racist and gives Triple H favors (in other words, state the obvious). Shawn Michaels ran in and took out Lance Cade, then distracted Jericho for Kingston to finish him off. Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho are probably going to hook it up in a Blindfold Match at Wrestlemania VII where they’ll swing at each other for 10 minutes and never connect because of the eye injury to Michaels. Get it?
WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James retained over Katie Lea Burchill. Kind of a lame-duck match to fill time, but they performed very well, and it’s nice to see them getting a new diva involved in the division. Mickie with a tornado DDT for the win.
World Heavyweight Champion Edge retained over Batista. Didn’t see that one coming with Batista now on Raw and there being no champion for the brand. I still don’t get having two world champions on the same brand, although I think it would draw huge money for them to unify the titles, book the match between Triple H and Edge, and push it heavily on the MyNetworkTV debut for Smackdown. I mean, you really don’t need two separate brand titles now that they are running combined PPVs again. Late in the match, the referee was knocked out, so Vickie Guerrero sent in her nephew Chavo to take over. Batista dragged Vickie Guerrero into the ring to hit her, but Edge took him out with a shot with the title belt to win the match. It was a great match until that finish, which I guess made sense with the involvement of the Familia stable, but was not my cup of tea. To me, they are like the nWo B-Team of Stevie Ray, Vincent, Scott Norton, and Horace. A stable in name only that is only effective because there is strength in numbers.
In the main event, WWE Champion Triple H retained over John Cena. This was a straight-up awesome match with no baloney like the last one had. Probably the best John Cena match you will ever see, and it took Triple H to carry him there. They’ve GOTTA do a return match!
Overall, I don’t think this was a very good show and was a let-down from the awesome One Night Stand. There were a couple of good matches and a great main event, but there was a lot of garbage in between too. I would pass on this until the DVD comes out.

Mark Henry is the ECW champion!?! Wow..must be a Michael PS Hayes make-up call.

I guess they made up for a lousy Night of Champions last night with CM Punk winning the title from Edge at the beginning. Although I still liked my unification idea…
Hayes doesn’t write ECW… Dusty Rhodes does, but yeah, it does seem like it.

Giving Punk the title is ridiculous, no way is he ready to carry the top show. Sucks for Edge, HHH arrives and stamps his authority in 5 minutes. I thought Cena would have won last night and then have a face (HHH) running against Edge to help build-up fan support for the channel switch-over.
Yeah, PPV was average and the majority of matches were predictable. I’d be worried about them pushing Kofi too quickly but at least it frees Jericho up to look like a serious main eventer. The DiBiase match was a complete waste, I was hoping to see if he wrestled as well as he is on the mike.
Was disappointed that Finaly didn’t turn uber-heel and kill Hornswoggle for losing and then call out Sheamus O’Shaunessy as his protégé. I think everyone is fed-up with the midget by now, surely he can’t destroy Finlay’s career any more.

The knock on CM Punk previously was his attitude, which he has supposedly improved as of late. I think his elevation is a breath of fresh air and something different, although he supposedly put on better matches in the indies than he has been in WWE.
I’ve only seen Kofi wrestle once, but he is supposedly beloved by the internet fans, so it looks to me as if this is his shot to see if he can do something with an opportunity. Also, I’ve heard that they are keen on pushing more wrestlers of different ethnic groups instead of just white guys. Fun fact I learned today: Kingston is from Ghana, not Jamaica.
I agree that Jericho getting the I-C title seemed out-of-place after they put him in title matches against Randy Orton when he returned, but I think the timing of it was trying to get the belt off of Jeff Hardy so he could go on his wellness vacation. As far as Finlay goes, I don’t think anything could “destroy” his career right now, because he trains the Divas and is an agent, so he is pretty well entrenched in the company regardless of the midgets he gets stuck with or whether he’s pushed or not. He’s valuable to the company in many other ways than just talent.

Sorry should have been more specific there, I was referring more to Finlay’s on-screen career. I just miss ‘My name is Finlay and I love to fight’ that’s all.
