A Gay Old Time: Another Gay Sequel!

Monday, June 30th, 2008

ags.JPG

Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild, which came hot off the presses in time to debut at the San Francisco Frameline32 Film Festival this past Saturday, is a movie religious conservative groups can use as proof to show the sexual moral depravity of the gay community. In many ways these groups would have a point, as practically every possible sexual taboo and fetish is joyfully glorified and playfully exploited on the screen, all in the name of crass comedy. To this I say, based on the sheer trashy awesomeness I witnessed; “Hur-f**king-ray!”

This raunchy, filthy, dirty, carnal, and, yes, hysterical spoof is just what we gays needs to embrace and laugh at all of our insipid stereotypes; like our tendency towards super flamboyantness, our roving “drive” to sex it up with anyone and anything, and our enjoyment and celebration of sex acts outside the “norm.” Another Gay Sequel is like a huge middle finger cheerily waving to all those who claim the gays are the cause of all the natural calamities in the United States (look it up, there are many groups who claim this). If we homosexuals are indeed the down fall of Western Civilization due to our sexual wiles and loose morals - which are all unflinchingly showcased in Another Gay Sequel - then I happily side with the queers sinking the ship.    (more…)

You might have missed me writing a wrap-up on TNA Slammiversary a few weeks ago, but trust me, I didn’t. I’m really kind of sour on them after the last two shows of theirs have pretty much been a waste of time. I’ll see if I can “get my smile back” enough to review Victory Road next month.

I have some really good news, but I can’t share it until next week. Seriously, this is pretty awesome (for me, at least). No, it’s not me getting whacked either, although I’m sure there are three or four people around here who would like to see me get Kyrbyed.

I’ve gotten some credited and uncredited run around the ‘net lately on my Even Colder story from last week, so that’s always fun.

And, there was the draft last week. I commented a little bit on my blog, which if you’re not reading… well, you’re probably not missing much.

So, that’s enough of me promoting myself. What happened last night? Well, some screwy stuff, I’d say…

ADV going the way of Geneon USA ?

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Last week ADV films began consolidating their assets and held an auction to sell their office supplies, which included things like office furniture, computers and even office consumables. Chris Oarr the sales account manager for ADV Films, confirmed that the auction is for surplus office material and has acknowledged that the company has cut back on its staff. Hence the auctioning of the now unused office supplies.

All of this has come to a boiling point with the recent Newtype / PIQ magazine failure, the closure of there television network, dropped anime titles from their website, discontinued DVD and manga titles, laid off employees and crap load of rumors floating around regarding there financial status.

Many of the titles that are or where being released by ADV films have had their English dubs suspended without notification of renewal by ADV films, such as Welcome to the NHK. Seriously I would recommend that you may want to re-think buying any new or currently running titles from them, if you haven’t started already. As it is not looking good for ADV films at the moment.

The Bi-Coastal edition:

Sounds from the Westcoast…

DJ Muggs (of Soul Assassins fame) teams-up with fellow Californi_0000_cover_wht.jpgan (and cold-chain swingin’ champion) Planet Asia on a full album colabo titled Pain Language. Tentatively to hit the streets on Sept. 2, the album will undoubtedly remind listeners of Muggs and GZA’s Grandmasters 2005 masterpiece. However, yearning ears wanting to hear original flows (which Asia has in abundance) and that signature ‘murky’ Souls Assassin sound should hardly dismiss Pain Language as a retread. Peep the B-side single:  “That’s What It Is”

Sounds from the Eastcoast…

The Saint continues to “save-the-day” with MP3 freebies as: “Do You Remember” is the second single from his forthcoming album About Time. untitled.jpgShout-out to Pro Se/Domination Recordings for continuing to make the strong push for that ‘authentic’ hip-hop music. And make sure you check for About Time when it drops! With Saint on the rhyme, and features from DJ Cade Money, Verses, NYOIL, Eternia (and a few other true-skool favorites) the album is bonafide live!

Michael Turner: 1972-2008

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

The comic book industry has lost one of its biggest superstars as Michael Turner, best known for co-creating Witchblade for Top Cow, Fathom for his own Aspen MLT, and a slew of covers for both DC and Marvel, passed away last night at the age of 37 after a long battle with cancer. It’s a testament to his spirit and tenacity that he continued to produce work right up until the very end. Our condolences to his friends and family.

Steve Austin Visit a Stone Cold Fake

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I’ve been debating the past few days on how to approach this topic. I know that you comic book types loathe and detest the discussion of pro wrestling on this site, but this is still newsworthy. If you haven’t heard about this incident, check out the Greensburg Daily News of Greensburg, Indiana or TMZ.com. A midwestern Steve Austin look-alike named “Even Colder” Mike Austin was supposed to appear at the Wal-Mart last Saturday the 21st to sign autographs. The session was supposed to promote a WCWO wrestling show in Greensburg later that evening.

As the article states, the Wal-Mart and the fans there thought they were going to see “Stone Cold” and not the “Even Colder” look-alike. Things headed quickly south from there. The police were at the show later on looking for Mike Austin and his “manager”. From the reports that I heard, they drew a fairly large crowd, probably fueled by the fact that people thought they were paying to see “Stone Cold” and not his doppleganger.

I don’t want to comment too much publicly because I have some inside information on the incident, and this quite honestly looks like it’s going to draw a great deal of criminal and civil litigation. I seriously believe that anybody that has any inside knowledge of what truly happened that day would be subpoenaed into court and called to testify.

Newsflash! Wrestling IS Real!

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

So much for fact-checking. From KHOU-11, a Houston television station that I am sad to say is headquarted mere blocks away from my home, comes this:

WWE chairman hurt in freak accident

KHOU.com staff report

HOUSTON — WWE Chairman Vince McMahon was injured in a freak accident in San Antonio Monday night. Just moments after giving away $500,000 in “McMahon’s Million Dollar Mania,” McMahon was crushed by a large electric sign that fell from the AT&T Center.
The extent of his injuries was unclear, but he was rushed to the hospital. WrestleMania officials planned to update fans on McMahon’s condition at a press conference in Houston Tuesday. WWE stars were scheduled to be on hand at the Toyota Center before filming SmackDown and ECW at the arena.

Here’s the “accident”:

DISCLAIMER (angry creators, please read)

[[WARNING! THIS COLUMN MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS!]]

“This job would be a lot easier if it was more like television. I’d find a clue during a special effects montage, and use it to solve the whole case in under an hour. That, and my assistant would be a beautiful woman in a tight sweater.” NYPD Crime Scene Investigator, Witchblade #117.

Well, about a month have passed since I last posted a column, and since I started this one, just putting in the Quote Of The Week… and I’ll confess that even if for most of that month I’ve been swamped with work, this past week I just slacked. So let’s see if I can finish this column today. Comics in this column were published on the week of 04/23… I still have two more weeks from April, the whole month of May, and three weeks (soon to be four) from June… Catch up time, yet again.

“Tru Loved” is Tru-ly Enjoyable!

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

tru.JPG

Tru Loved, a new indie movie recently playing at the San Francisco Frameline32 Film Festival, is equal parts uproarious and touching, which is no mean feat!  Written and directed by the clever Stewart Wade, Tru Loved is a surprisingly strong and powerful story about a young High Schooler named Gertrude, aka Tru, as she struggles to survive the treacherous waters of teen acceptance and social norms. Billed as a gay-themed romantic comedy, Tru Loved is very much gay-themed, romantic and laugh-worthy, but it is also so much more; it is a message film without the “After School Special” moralizing and grandstanding.

One of the better things about this flim is in how it is able to balance multiple engrossing plot threads that smartly weave in and out of the main story. The general focus of the movie, of course, is on it’s heroine Tru, played by the delightfully charismatic and talented Najarra Townsend (who expertly shoulders most of the weight of the movie, even when she overly-tosses her hair as a means of conveying deep emotional distress), who isn’t popular, hip, or cool (are they ever in indie films?) and is ostracized because of her uniqueness. That is until a rumor circulates that she *gasp* has two moms, which is a half-truth really as she also happens to have two dads! Spurned on by the possibility that there might be someone at his school who could understand him, closeted football quarterback Lodell “Lo” quickly befriends and uses Tru as his hetero-cover bid for normality. Throughout the ups and down of High School life, and her “relationship” with the tortured Lo, Tru becomes inspired to create her school’s first Gay/Straight Alliance. Naturally much calamity and mucho laughs ensue.   (more…)

xxxHolic Kei (First Impressions) -Spoiler Warning-

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

The first season of xxxHolic left a lasting impression on me, it was one of those shows that you could not put down once you started watching it. But that is to be expected when production companies like: CLAMP, TBS, BMG Japan, MOVIC, Production I.G and Studio Twinkle work on a single Anime series together. Well the second season is entitled xxxHolic Kei, which started on the 4th of April this year. And is currently on its 11th episode. The series will be 13 episodes in length unlike the first season which was 24 episodes.

Steve Ekstrom Needs You to “Double Click Your Mouse”. (Insert masturbation joke here.)

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Oh, Steve--you pathetic sonuvabitch...

A few months ago, I joined RedRoom.com at the request of Ivory Madison, CEO of Red Room, who I interviewed for Newsarama for her work on Huntress Year One for DC Comics.

Well, now, I’m embroiled in the “clicking war” of a lifetime. The stakes: an expense paid overnight for two to San Francisco and dinner with said CEO and her friends from Red Room. Basically, for every unique click I receive between June 1 and July 31st, I get a notch on the post–the more notches–you get the rest…

Here’s the thing–I’M IN FIRST PLACE…but just barely. Want to help me win this thing?

A Smart comedy, sort of

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Though nothing in my mind will outshine his role as Brick Tamland, Steve Carell delivered an entertaining performance as Maxwell Smart, code name Agent 86, in the Warner Brother’s summer flick Get Smart. Based off of the character from the 1960’s television series, Get Smart updates the spy story with a new cast of characters, including Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin, and The Rock, and modernizes the terrorist menace threatening the world.

Myth or Truth?

Either way you go,  it would be most exciting to see what else Sony could do.  I happen to like the Playstation a lot better than most game consoles and a new console that will have an extensive software suite for the managing of content being streamed to a TV or Hi Fi source, would be kind of cool.  Here is some info I read on a site about this possible happening but I wouldn’t get too excited about it just yet. Only time will tell but we will see.

                                                                               ~ Kyotee

“Rumors spread on internet a unveiling the launch of the next console from Sony, named PlayStation4 in less than 18 months, at least this informs a Australian web publication Smarthouse.

The device will come with some new changes supposedly including the same architecture as the current console but with a new drive bay and attachment area. The PlayStation will include extensive software suite for the managing of content being streamed to a TV or Hi Fi source.

“We have even looked at a Sony home server based on PlayStation technology. This would allow consumers to connect home automation devices to the Sony server while also delivering online gaming and access to an extensive movie and music library,” said one Sony source.

“As a matter of course, I have the vision of PlayStation 4, 5 and 6, which will merge into the network,” announced Ken Kutaragi, the Sony chairman.

“The design concept of the Cell processor is the network processor.” Kutaragi said, adding that the network environment now makes his visions for a net-based games console possible.

So, the PlayStation fans won’t get to be bored with the actual release of the device, that the new PS4 will arrive. One thing is sure, the fact that not everybody will get the new PS3 console, but if they will, it will be because of the new content being streamed to a TV or Hi Fi source. ”
