Entertaining Parenting Moments

Lately, my three-year-old discovered the Super Friends. He’d seen a couple of random episodes of Justice League, but he’d never watched anything in a cohesive way. As it is, I have all the sets that have been released so far, and my wife and I decided that if he was interested, then we should probably let him start with the younger-skewing Super Friends.

By this point, he’s totally into them. Like any burgeoning comic fan, he probably enjoys the “Challenge”/Legion of Doom season the most; however, The Legendary Super Powers Show and Galactic Guardians seasons are making a run for the top.

Galactic Guardians

His sudden fandom has given us a couple of funny moments.

For example, he likes to pretend that he’s a super-hero (usually Superman or Batman), which means that his one-year-old brother has to be one, too. Typically, when the older one is Superman, the little one is Batman; when the older one is Batman, the little one is Robin. While in this mode, my oldest insists that they be called by their “super-hero names”. Nothing gets you fucked-up looks from a one-year-old like repeatedly calling him Batman.

In the middle of play, the three-year-old’s now given to suddenly yelling something like, “Daddy! Rhinos are coming!” I’ll say, “Really?” And he’ll say, “Don’t worry! My Batarang will stop ‘em!”

On Thursday, he’d been pretending to be Superman all day. He breaks out with the above exchange. I say, “Hey, I thought you were Superman.” He says, “Then I use my heat vision.” Now that’s just crazy.
