Another whole lotta nothin’…

WWE U.S. Champion Montel Vontavious Porter retained over Matt Hardy. One of Chris Benoit’s great professional accomplishments before he did what he did was getting MVP ready for the big time. Pairing him with Hardy could only help him here. A decent opener with good action. MVP went over with the Playmaker.

Backstage, Dusty Rhodes bragged about creating the Great American Bash and making it what it is today. Ummmm… today it’s a third-rate PPV. I don’t think I’d brag about that. Why don’t you brag about your polka dots and how you used to be a common man while you’re at it, Dust?

Hornswoggle won the Cruiserweight Open to become WWE Cruiserweight Champion. I wonder how those five other guys feel about having to put over a midget. It just shows you how little the people in charge think about putting over this division, even though Mitchell Cole brags about the cruiserweights on Smackdown all the time. The midget might be over, but if the mini division did not work, then this will not work either. Hornswoggle ran in at the end, hit Jamie Noble off the top rope, and got the pin.

Carlito defeated The Sandman in a Singapore Cane on a Pole Match. The cane never came into play in the match, which threw all the psychology of trying to get the damn thing out the window. Sandman got the cane, but swung at Carlito and missed. Carlito won with the Backcracker. I thought McMahon wanted to push Sandman?

WWE Women’s Champion Candice Michelle retained over Melina. Jim Ross helpfully mentioned during the match that Candice is the first Diva Search competitor to become champion. And here we all thought there was no use for that contest! I knew there was a reason why JR still pulls a paycheck. Anyway, it was nearly over before it got started, and Candice won with the Candy Wrapper (?).

Backstage, Matt Hardy talked to his brother Jeff about losing. Candice Michelle showed up and poured water over her cans, which distracted them. I don’t know why… you can probably still get her Playboy on eBay if you haven’t seen them yet. Then Ron Simmons showed up to say “DAMN”. Does even Ron think this crap is funny? Maybe having Jeff stare at the silicone valley on TV will finally dispel all those unfounded “Jeff Hardy is gay” rumors…

WWE Intercontinental Champion Umaga retained over Jeff Hardy. This was actually a pretty good match considering Ooga-Booga was in it… they could make this into the AJ Styles/Abyss feud of WWE. Unfortunately, Jeff must have still been thinking about Candice’s rack and how much it might cost to get a pair of those when he gets his sex change operation, because Umaga splashed his head in the corner and hit the Samoan Spike for the win.

ECW World Champion Jim John Morrison retained over CM Punk. I liked the Johnny Nitro gimmick. It doesn’t fit ECW, but it would be nice if they still had Mercury around to continue it. Awesome match, but the sheeple in attendance weren’t into it. Morrison won with a pinfall after blocking Punk’s springboard attack with his knees. I think this will be a nice feud to give ECW some face time, but they need to put a lot more emphasis on this feud in the other brands to really make it work.

Randy Orton defeated Dusty Rhodes in a Texas Bull Rope Match. Another short match = there are too many matches on the card. Five minutes in, and Orton gives the old man MORE COWBELL and pins him. Dusty, don’t fear the reaper. Anyway, afterwards, Orton tried to beat him down, but Cody Rhodes showed up to make the save. Eccccch. At least Dusty kept his shirt on, I guess…

World Heavyweight Champion The Great Khali retained over Kane and Batista in a Triple Threat Match. The faces ganged up on Khali early, but when the two broke each other’s pinfall attempts, they both turned on each other. Batista went all over Kane, but Khali threw out Batista, hit Kane with a chokeslam, and won the match. It’s tough to say what the outcome should have been. Do you keep the title on Khali and give somebody a rub for beating him that doesn’t need it and ruins your “monster” on the show? Do you put it on the guy that used to be a champion but the company lost faith in? Do you hotshot it over to the guy that probably deserves it but is perennially a jobber to the stars? I’m not sure…

ALL HAIL KING BOOKER showed up and said that Triple H and Jerry Lawler have no business calling themselves kings. Jim Ross mentioned that Triple H was returning at Summerslam. Wonder if he’ll bring ALL HAIL KING BOOKER’s mug shot like last time.

In the main event, WWE Champion John Cena retained over Bobby Lashley. Good match between the two, but baby-baby feuds only traditionally work at big shows like Wrestlemania. You never got the sense that these two were really feuding. Anyway, there was a lot of great back-and-forth wrestling. Late in the match, Lashley got caught in the STFU and struggled to get to the ropes. Lashley hit back with a spear, but Cena kicked out. Cena won with an F-U off the middle rope.

This was another one of those shows with good wrestling, but not much else spectaclewise that would make you want to buy the show. Unless you absolutely have to see Candice v. Melina one more time, I would wait for the video.

So glad that I was too busy to deal with this garbage…wow.

  2. "The Guvnor" Paul C Says:

This was one of the few free PPVs that Sky Sports gives us and I thought it was decent enough but nothing fantastic.

-It was a good opener except that MVP’s finisher was a bit botched but I expected it to be one of the better matches on the card and for me it was indeed the match of the night. I didn’t mind who won as I’ve really warmed to MVP in the past few months but I would like Hardy to get the belt so that he can be the Hardy that gets a push for a change.
-I guess they had to free Chavo up to fight with Rey when he returns. Shows how much they care about CW division when the midget Little Bastard gets the belt, but who cares it only ever gets defended every 3 months or so.
-Nothing special here,I expected Carlito to win.
-Although I thought it was good the way Melina kept working the arm making her look like a bit of a capable wrestler, Candice winning makes the joke roll on. This division is complete garbage at the minute. They have their best wrestler on SD!, Mickie & Beth just make up the numbers in pointless tag matches every week. My TV then seemed to turn itself over to a softcore porn channel for a bit, oh no wait, it was just Candice being even more of a whore, like everyone hasn’t already seen her naked. Completely ridiculous segment.
-I still can’t get into Umaga, they aren’t doing much with the IC title either.
-The other very good match, I liked that there was plenty of heel action from Morrision but the match could have went on for another bit I felt and the finish came very quickly.
-Orton wins as expected, dull match.
-Better than I expected given that it was 3 big guys fighting. That is a good question about what to do with the title, personally I don’t mind Khali having it for the moment but I would like to see Kane get the gold as Batista has had it plenty over the past while. I wonder if they will make Khali keep it until Undertaker returns?
-Looks like King Bookah will be jobbing to HHH and possibly, heaven forbid, Jerry Lawler.
-I thought Lashley done pretty good but you knew Cena would win using his minimalist style. I was half expecting Kennedy to interfere but I agree face/face feuds rarely work.

Apologies that this comment turned out a bit long-winded but I just wanted to share my thoughts.

  3. JB Says:

Khali being champ..should p*ss off any wrestler thats been in the business more than 5 years. And Lou Thes said Hulk Hogan couldn’t wrestle!! Khali makes Giant Gonzalez look like Bret Hart

I am more than dissapointed with the whole title scene..thank you Micheal “PS” Hayes for that excellent booking.

  4. Some Person Says:

You’d think with them advertising Rey Mysterio on everything to do with the Great American Bash last Sunday, that he was going to return on that night.
Otherwise, they could have used some other superstar to advertise it. Because Rey wasn’t even there!

Anyways, nice brief descriptions of the event matches.
Although, in some of the matches, a little bit more happened than what you put down.
For example, the Triple Threat match.. Khali didn’t just throw Batista out then chokeslam Kane, no no no. Infact, it was Batista who was going to actually WIN but the WWE are too stupid to realize that Khali doesn’t bring fans, whereas Batista does. So does Kane really. And everyone can tell Vince is in it just for the money. So they let Khali pull Batista out of the pin, then throw him into steps. Then Khali reigned supreme over Kane.

The main event, that Cena vs. Lashley, was pretty poor.
I expected Lashley to win, because of all that ECW garbage and Coach taking the title off of him when he was drafted, you know.
The ending to that match was lame. An FU off the top rope?
Not really thrilling. It was just like that Samoan Drop move that Mr. Kennedy did when he was still on Smackdown!. Big move, but not a good ending to a supposed-to-be-thrilling match that WWE hyped up about two months before the event.

The Randy Orton vs. Dusty Rhodes match was very dull indeed.
If Dusty Rhodes beat Randy, then Randy shouldn’t even be allowed to call himself the Legend Killer.
Dusty is hardly a Legend, he was just one of them punks around in the 1980s.. but guess who is there to prove that Dusty IS a Legend!?
    Good Ol’ Cody Rhodes! WHO!!??!
Ah. The WWE never let go of a good Legend.
Thats why you see Hulk Hogan come back nearly every month.
The name ‘Rhodes’ will always ring through the WWE and its fans’ heads, no matter what.
Good Ol’ Cody is here to stay! Unlike Goldust..
Now Goldust vs. Randy Orton would be a decent match.. at least there would be a possibility for either one of the men to win.

Sorry for this comment to be so long but I wanted to get some of my points across, and this seemed like the place to do so.
