San Diego Looms Large

We’re mere hours away from the Big Show, the 10,000 lb. gorilla of the genre fan universe, the San Diego Comic-Con International. Already, news outlets have lined up to either pay homage (as several respectful articles have already done, acknowledging the show as a pop culture force) or make fun of guys in stormtrooper outfits. In the past, I’ve mainly gone to shows to either a) promote Shotgun or b) cover stuff for various outlets, like Newsarama.

This year, I’ll be doing a version of bizarre triple-duty. Mainly, I’ll be working the booth for Fangoria Comics, where I was recently made Associate Editor. That booth is going to be a good time; we’re teamed up with Shocker Toys and Vampira: The Movie in a multi-booth spread that will feature signings from the likes of Michael Madsen and Ken Foree (that’s right! The guy who said, “When there is no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth!”). We probably won’t be announcing my book yet, but that day should be coming soon.

I’ll also be covering some panels for the ‘Rama; mostly, it’ll be figure-related stuff, like the new offerings from Hasbro (Marvel Legends), Mattel (who now have a comprehensive DC license) and DC Direct. I’ll likely hit some other panels and parties in order to help contribute, but I’m not sure how that will work in the face of my Fango booth schedule. It’s going to be interesting juggling both, and I know that Matt Brady can be a harsh mistress. (ZING! Yeah, like he has time to read this).

The last thing doesn’t actually require me to do anything, but one project that’s getting a showing is something for which I did some work. Topps, Bungie, Microsoft and Marvel have teamed up for a HALO panel that will talk about HALO 3, the new HALO:UPRISING series from Marvel, and the new set of HALO trading cards. I actually wrote the text for the HALO cards, and I’m pretty excited to see how they all turn out. I can’t say anything about HALO 3, but the art for the set in total is pretty righteous.

Overall, I think this is going to be an exceedingly crazy weekend. I don’t think that I’ll be able to post much (if at all), but look to Newsarama for a variety of information and articles (some of which, due to the magic of embargo, I’ve already written).

And just for fun, here’s the Fangoria Comics signing schedule . . .
