So…everybody’s talking about Cloverfield…
Unless you’ve been under a rock, you’ve heard about the TRANSFORMERS movie. Now…if you managed to keep from being under a rock long enough to see the movie, you may have caught the trailer that some say actually upstaged the movie.
That trailer? It’s for an untitled movie that is operating under the working title of “Cloverfield” (you know…the thing that my blog title says everyone is talking about). It’s the latest J.J. Abrams project (he of Lost, ALIAS and Mission: Impossible III fame). The trailer is made to look like it is just shot by people at a party with high school or college age kids…right before something BIG blasts out from the center of downtown like a nuclear volcano. Then shit just starts being flung all around from the center of the city out, with explosions and panic.
It is meant to get you leaving the theater frantic to find out what is going on with this flick. How do you find out more about it? Well…you start doing Google searches.
You search for J.J. Abrams. You search for Bad Robot (the production company). You even get desperate enough to search for 1/18/2008…the release date. And then you find something: http://www.1-18-08.com
Of course, that’s just some pictures that you can move around on the screen with no readily apparent “easter eggs” in this bit of viral marketing. Maybe there’s more to come on that?
Working backwards, if you searched for Bad Robot, you come up with the Wiki entry that refers to Cloverfield and confirms that is the subject of the trailer in front of TRANSFORMERS. When you dig up the Wiki entry on Cloverfield (no great detective work, I’ll give you…but who knows if someone had to dig for the info now on Wiki or if a P.A. posted it directly), you find more intriguing stuff.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the somewhat challenging viral site: http://www.ethanhaaswasright.com/
Now…I was able to get past the first challenge on that site and see the video message. I even sent an e-mail to “Van”, who “sent me” clues on what I’m supposed to do to get past the next…but hell if I can decipher it.
Fortunately for everyone, another blogger cracked the code and offers the video files you get from cracking the codes (if not a way to break the codes): http://haasunderground.blogspot.com
Other than that…there’s a lot of pontificating…mostly focused on this being a Cthulhu movie, while USA Today suggests it’s a Voltron, Godzilla, or Lost spin-off movie. Cthulhu seems like the strongest bet…not that you couldn’t find a way to blend that into the three ideas put forth by USA Today.
Anyone out there following this and have some ideas? Feel free to share with the rest of the class.

“Godzilla!” Wow, I actually had conversations with two different people that actually thought the same thing. That the trailer was for a new Godzilla flick.
We could only hope! :)

IMDB says:
A giant monster movie (currently referred to internally as Cloverfield; the monster itself is referred to as “The Parasite”, not to be confused with the film project The Parasyte) that is shot using home video cameras from the point of view of people who are experiencing an attack on New York City.

So…if that’s the case–then this movie is H-Y-P-E T-R-I-P-E.
If it were Cthulhu–that would be awesome–but will Joe Q. Public get it? If it’s Godzilla–Joe Q. Public won’t care…Godzilla isn’t an American pop culture icon–so only a fraction of “Nerdom” will rejoice.
If it’s a big monster movie–you wouldn’t be able to pay me to watch it.
