Smallville: Promise S6E16

This week’s episode of Smallville was a slow, dramatic one, with non stop shocks and action. Wait, what? In a true revival of the series, this season has been nothing short of amazing, and here we have a character piece with drastic changes to the overall tone of the show. Read on for a spoiler-filled review!

Yowza! We were promised Lana and Lex’s wedding in this episode, and that’s exactly what we got. But first was the lead up to the big event.

This episode was directed by Rick Rosenthal. I point this out because from now on, I will actively seek out anything this guy touches. This was a brilliant piece of craftsmanship. The music was timed perfectly, with a sense of beauty and eeriness that matched Lex’s looks of love and utter psychosis. The Cinematography was incredible as well. Again, the shots set the tone by emphasizing simple beauty in every scene. The Luthor mansion, which we’ve seen a thousand times on this show, never looked as good as it did in this episode. Every shot was carefully chosen, and I imagine filmed in several takes, as there wasn’t a flub in the bunch.

The concept of the show had the same lead-up to the wedding told three times. Once from Clark’s perspective, once from Lex’s, and once from Lana’s. Now, this would get annoying if it was done all the time, but as a novelty it worked. Also, it was organic to the story and what the story had to put forth, so it didn’t feel forced at all. The downside is we got about 20 minutes out of a 44 minute show. The upside is that even when we saw the same scene twice, it revealed something totally new the second time.

SPOILER TIME!: Of course, the big reveal of this episode was Clark’s secret…to LANA. Fina-freakin-ly! I’m glad that’s out in the open, although now the only recurring supporting cast members that DON’T know are Lex, Lois, and Jimmy. It takes one more bit of mystery out of the show, but it was really no longer creating suspense, just annoyance. She obviously has gotten closer and closer to the truth of late, and it was just a matter of time until this happened. Thank Rao the time was this week’s episode.

We also saw Lex truly be reborn as psychopath supreme, as he killed a man with his bare hands….moments before his wedding….underneath the CHURCH. Yowch. If you’ve been waiting for evil Lex to make his mark on Smallville, don’t worry, he’s here.

Lionel was the ruthless man we knew from the first couple of seasons again and I have a feeling he has a very specific and big plan ahead for us. The last 6 episodes of the season promise to be huge ones, for certain.

All in all, this was one of the finest crafted episodes to date, and gave a whole LOT of story to push things forward. Smallville has really continued on its upswing from last season all through this one. These are compelling characters in compelling stories again, something the series lacked a bit in seasons 3 and 4. I can’t wait to see the resolution of the monster-baby plot, the 33.1 plot, the Lionel plot, the Lana KNOWS plot, and so on and so forth. Oh yeah, there’s this Martian guy chillin’ with Clark every once in a while now, one of Clark’s best friends ever may have some powers, and there’s still fugitives from the Phantom Zone running around, which we’ll see more of next week thanks to the help of some WWE stars. This episode could have been drab and a rehash of a lot of old subject matter; instead it was exciting, RELEVANT, and a fine cinematic accomplishment. I absolutely recommend that anyone who didn’t see this episode hunt it down any way possible.
